New learning modules: Confidential information management and violence prevention

Island Health has endorsed new learning modules on confidential information management and on violence prevention. These courses are required for Island Health medical staff but are of interest to and accessible for all family physicians.

Confidential Information Management Training

As healthcare workers, we are tasked with the duty of protecting confidential information every day. Expansion into electronic health records can make this more complex, placing patient information at much greater risk.

This course is required for all medical staff at Island Health. In February 2023, the Freedom of Information and Protection Act (FIPPA) required privacy education for medical staff. Island Health requires medical staff to complete the online module and review the CIM CODE annually.

Violence Prevention Training

Working in what can be very stressful and high pressure environments, it is essential that we are all prepared and feel capable of managing when faced with a potentially violent individual. Healthcare workers are disproportionately impacted by violence in the workplace, which causes undue strain on our workforce.

This online course is required for all medical staff in British Columbia. As of May 2022, the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC) required health authorities to implement provincial violence prevention training for all employees, including medical staff.
