Island Health has improved access to its comprehensive bariatric/metabolic surgery services, with eligible patients now facing an approximate six-month wait for initial assessment at the Bariatric Clinic – down from over four years pre-pandemic.

This allows timely referral for life-changing procedures such as Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass, which deliver an average 35% total body weight loss and often cure major conditions like Type 2 Diabetes. The program provides full wrap-around pre- and post-operative care (including lifestyle and medication management) for up to 12 months after surgery.

Patients qualify with a BMI >40 or BMI >35 plus at least one obesity-related comorbidity (e.g., Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea).
